Someday Starts Today

The catchy slogan above belongs to Beazer homes which has many developments under construction in our area and nation-wide. It’s a slogan designed to get you moving toward buying a new home and, hopefully, making your decision now. But it’s a thought which might cause you to think of your spiritual commitment to follow in the steps of Jesus.

How many “someday” wants, desires, thoughts, do you have about your spiritual life? “Someday I’m going to talk to my neighbor about her relationship with Christ.” “Someday I’m going to read my Bible through from cover to cover.” “Someday I’m going to begin coming to all the services and Bible classes.” “Someday I’m going to give as I am being prospered by the Lord.” “Someday I’ll spend more time talking with my children about the Lord.”

When we say, “Someday” we imply, “But not now!” “Now I have other priorities that I must take care of!” “Just now my career is in the balance and I have important decisions to make about it.” “We both have to work to provide a good home for our children—who has time for religion at a time like this? ” “If we can just get through this year, we’ll have time for that spiritual stuff!”

Jesus told a story about a rich man who felt he had at last achieved financial security and said, “This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’” (Luke 12:18-20).

Waiting till after you have achieved worldly goals may not leave you time to turn to spiritual ones. Earthly goals, even when achieved, can only last while the earth lasts. When our present earth comes to an end, who’ll worry about the Jaguar in the driveway of the million dollar mansion? We’ll be looking for those “new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). But will we be prepared?

We need to get our spiritual “somedays” into order and make them “todays.” Let’s decide now, as today’s priority, to be more consistently committed to following Jesus—in our daily lives, in our worship, in our study of His word, in our giving, in our witnessing to our neighbors, in our prayer life.
